Then it’s just a question of copying the new articles to the Google Drive or updating the local Mendeley folder (if files have different sizes). The result of the matching step is saved locally in a “cache” file to speed up future runs. If two file names have more than 90% match, it assumes that it’s the same article. It uses the SequenceMatcher function from the difflib module. The matching part of the script compares each file name in the Google Drive with the file names in the local Mendeley folder. Your web library will now contain the same references that are in your desktop library. Go to the Mendeley website, sign in, and click on Library. ![]() After the sync happens and the green spinny wheel disappears, your Mendeley Desktop library will be synced to your Mendeley web library. I don’t use the Android app to download PDFs anymore but I still have old PDFs that I didn’t take the time to rename. References that are added to Mendeley Reference Manager will not be automatically saved as PDF files to your computer. If you're finding that the references in Mendeley Reference Manager aren't matching up with the references in Mendeley Web, click on the Sync button in the upper right hand corner of the desktop application. This might not be a big problem for new files but at some point Mendeley Desktop and the app I used on the tablet produced slightly different file names for the same article. I needed something slightly better than a rsync because it’s possible that the filenames are not the same between the two folders. The updateMendeley.py script is on the GitHub repo. You should sync frequently in order to ensure that your most recent changes are saved to the cloud. This will push any changes you’ve made to your library up to the cloud for storage, making them available on other devices and computers. I wrote a Python script that checks the Google Drive folder and Mendeley’s local folder, matches PDF files and syncs them. By not syncing your Zotero account, you can maintain a library of citations and documents on ONE computer without having to use Zoteros cloud storage. Sync - use this button to force Mendeley to perform a sync. ![]()
